A prayer for Easter

Isle of Skye, 2009

Living God,

On this Easter Day,

we say beyond all logic,

beyond the narrow scope of our realities,

            that you live.

You live in the cells of our being.

You live in the inaccessible depths of the ocean.

You live in the spaces between friends

and in the spaces between enemies.

You live in the gilded halls of power.

You live in the cardboard houses propped up against the world’s garbage dumps.

You live in the craters left by bombs dropped anonymously from the sky.

You live in the tender touch between a mother and her newborn baby.

Even when we fail to recognize you,

                        which is nearly every moment,

you recognize us,

            call us by name,

                        and you love us.

            You. love. us.

The irony of life on this planet is

we need your grace to return

even a bit of that love to you,

                        for we

                                    are broken by life’s trauma.

                        We

                                    are blinded by grief.

                        We

are boarded in by walls we erect

                                    to keep us safe.

                        We

are busy with what does not matter

and that keeps us distracted from what really does.

Bring your life to our death,

                                                radiating,

                                                healing

                                                Christ.

We belong to You                           now and always.

amen.
